Extra addresses

Add up to five more addresses to one account. Mail to them lands in the same inbox, encrypted to the same key, and you can send from them too.

An extra address is a second name on the same mailbox. Mail sent to it arrives in your inbox, encrypted to your key — there is no second key, no second password and no second sign-in.

Extra addresses — 5

Five is also the ceiling no plan lifts.

Where they live

Open Settings → Addresses. The summary reads "Your main address, and up to 5 more that you can send and receive with."

The first row is your Main address: "Your sign-in and your key live here. Cannot be changed." Everything below it is an extra address.

Add one

  1. Press Add an address.
  2. Type the name you want under New address. The app checks it as you type and shows Available when it is free.
  3. Press Add.

A name that is already taken, or not allowed, is refused with a reason before anything is created.

You do not need an extra address for tags

Your address already accepts anything after a + — mail to you+shop@ lands in your inbox with the tag kept, with nothing to set up. That is why an extra address cannot contain a +. See Sub-addressing.

Send from one

Each extra address has a Send from switch: "Offer this address as the sender when you write." Turn it on and the address appears in the composer's sender chooser. One address carries the Default sender mark — the one offered first.

When you reply, the reply goes out from the address the mail came to, so a conversation keeps the address it started on.

A signature of its own

Under each address, Signature for mail sent from this address lets you give it its own sign-off; left alone it reads No signature. See Signatures.

Remove one

Press Remove this address and confirm — the confirmation says plainly Remove — mail to it will bounce. From that moment mail sent to the address is rejected by the server; mail that already arrived stays in your mailbox, because it is yours.

Addresses the operator added

An address with the note "Added by the operator; only the operator removes it." is not yours to remove. It behaves the same for receiving; ask the operator if it should go.

What an extra address is not

  • Not a second account. One sign-in, one password, one key, one inbox, one storage meter.
  • Not a separate identity to the key directory. Public key lookups answer for your main address; an extra address is not published.
  • Not a way to change your main address. The main address cannot be changed — see Change your username.

On a Free account

The Addresses screen is listed for every account and shows your main address exactly as it is. The Add an address row is there, never greyed, marked or hidden; pressing it opens the Plus window.

Cannot see

  • Anything in the mail sent to them — it is encrypted to your one key

Can see

  • Which addresses belong to this account
  • Which of them may send

Does mail to an extra address go to a different inbox?

No. It lands in the same inbox as everything else, encrypted to the same key.

Do I sign in with an extra address?

No. Sign-in is always your main address.

Does an extra address have its own password or key?

No. One account, one password, one key.

Can I send from an extra address?

Yes, once you turn on Send from for it. The composer then offers it as a sender.

What happens to mail sent to a removed address?

It bounces. Mail that arrived before you removed it stays in your mailbox.

Does it use the same storage?

Yes. Everything on the account draws on one meter — see Storage.

What if Plus lapses?

Your addresses are not deleted. Adding a new one asks for Plus.
