Private.Ki over Tor

Private.Ki is a web app. It runs in Tor Browser like any other site, and Tor adds the one thing our encryption does not: it hides your network address from us.

What Private.Ki hides on its own
On any network, with or without Tor
- Message bodies and attachments — encrypted on your device
- Your private key and your passphrase — never transmitted
- Your password — the OPAQUE protocol never sends it
- Reactions, timers, unsend and destroy instructions — encrypted too
What Tor adds
Because our server does see this otherwise
- Your IP address at connection time — we see a Tor exit instead
- Your approximate location, which follows from the IP
- Which network you are on — home, office, hotel
How to use it
- Open Tor Browser and go to the web app. Sign in as usual — the OPAQUE handshake and DPoP‑bound session work over Tor unchanged.
- Expect the first load to be slower than on a direct connection.
- Real‑time delivery uses a WebSocket, which works over Tor.
- Keep Tor Browser's default security level unless you know why you are changing it. JavaScript is required — it is where the encryption happens.
What Tor does not change
Who you write to, and when, is still visible to our server — that is how delivery works, and we publish that list. Tor hides where you are; Private.Ki hides what you said. Together they cover most of what an ordinary email provider can see about you.
Onion service
We do not currently advertise a dedicated .onion address. If that matters to you, tell us — it helps us prioritise.
